Yes, its a airlock - but its only to cycle atmospheres. Its not holding the vacuum back. The pressures must be similar, otherwise the people would have needed full suits, not just breathing apparatus.

that wasnt the issue

it was a rotation lock with a wheeel, you CANT kick that open, i dont care if its an airlock or if its stopping your cats from getting into the kitchen its NOT KICKABLE :)

didn't you hear him near the start? 'This low gravity'll make you soft. When you get soft... Pandora'll ---- you out dead with zero warning'. (hes just that badass hehe)

Anyway from a science point: For the same airpressure, apart from there having to roughly 20% or greater portion of oxygen for the filter masks to work, you would also need a gas that's heavier than nitrogen and so yes it would be harder to kick the door open than if it was air both sides. But all it has to do is be airtight sealing. Increasing the pressure inside the complex would just make the entire structure more vulnerable to earthquakes/violent pressure shifts such as exposions or the aircraft on the runway.

Now that I have you thinking I'll just give the simple answer. Theres no rotation lock on the door, instead theres a horizontal bar lock system with a giant red stripped quick release pad, you know...the thing he kicks :P.
You tend to see them more on the new emergeny firedoors in the US.
